A New Couch

Ted and I bought a new house, and it’s almost ready for us to move in. So the decorating fun can (almost) begin!

We bought our first thing for the house today, and we went a little outside our usual operating procedures to acquire said thing.

We bought a couch, but not just any couch – we custom-made a sofa at West Elm. It’s extra-long, deep, plush and perfect (I know. Perfect set-up for puns; not done unintentionally. You animals). We built it to our specifications, yes, but we have no idea what it’s going to actually look like. The picture on the screen was not what we built. We have a pretty good idea what the end result will be. But, we don’t *know*. We trust that the fabric will feel and look like the chosen swatch. We know what ninety-four inches looks like on a tape measure. We sat on a couch with the same filling as ours will have.

A lot of the time, I get so caught up in things being right, and in being right now. This couch will take months to show up on our doorstep, and we have no idea what it will actually look like – let alone, what it will look like in our space. We set a plan with expectations, paid the bill, and now we just have to let it go and wait.

I think that’s beautiful, and so much more than just a couch.
