Is there anything as wonderful as a chai latte on a rainy day? A good chai latte is chock full of warming aromas, and tastes a bit like how a big hug feels. I woke up craving one, but I did not feel like going through a drive-thru. So I whipped one up using essentials oils and tea I have on hand! You could just as easily use powdered spices if oils aren’t your game. Top it off with a little frothed milk and some cinnamon and you won’t regret staying home in your jammies.
For the tea latte
- 1 cup (8 oz) brewed tea. I have Harney and Sons cinnamon spice in the cupboard and I cannot rave about it enough. It is worth the splurge. But any plain black, caramel or cinnamon tea will work. Herbal or caffeinated, totally your call.
- 1/2 cup milk of your choice. I used oatmilk, but not for any particular reason other than that we have it.
- 1 drop each of cardamom, ginger, clove and cinnamon essential oil.
- Sweetener to taste. I used about a teaspoon of stevia, but next time I’ll see how honey affects the flavor.
- Optional:
1 teaspoon of coconut oil for a little extra creaminess.
1 scoop vital proteins collagen to up the nutritional value.
For the topper
- 1/4 cup milk of your choice.
- Milk frother. I have this one, which is under $20 and totally portable. Take it on the go (maybe camping in isolation, because social distancing?) and majorly level-up your coffee game.
- Powdered cinnamon.
Let’s make it!
Combine all of the tea latte ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, whisking occasionally. In the meanwhile, froth your milk in a separate cup or pyrex. You can warm it prior to frothing, but you don’t have to. Once both those things are done, pour your latte ingredients in your favorite mug. Spoon or pour your frothed milk on top. Sprinkle with cinnamon (Don’t skip this step! It’s the crown of the latte!)
You’re done! Kick your feet up and savor your labors.
XO,
Weez
